Last week, Burt and I had the opportunity to check out some cool new VoIP phone systems. We’re in the process of working out a partnership that we’ll post about soon. That is what inspired this week’s “App of the week.”

Many of us have used non-traditional voice apps (such as Skype) to communicate with people overseas or even in different states. This week’s app is similar, but features HD video conferencing and super clear voice connections. Viber (rhymes with fiber), is a free multi-platform app available to use on your phone or PC. It integrates with your existing contact list so you can easily communicate with everyone you already know. The setup process is super easy and you can invite others to Viber through multiple channels such as e-mail, text message, Facebook or Twitter. Viber works off of 3g/4g or wi-fi, so just remember that while you’re using it so you don’t go over.

We tested it out this morning to make sure it was blog-worthy. Burt was impressed with its features like the ability to transfer a call to your computer, the video messaging and the overall clarity of the call. The desktop version allows video chat and other features. On the mobile version, you can send texts or “doodles” to people in your contact list and create group message threads. The overall design of the app is very similar to the layout of the phone, so it’s really user friendly.

I checked out their Facebook page today and it looks like they’re really good at providing support and updates on a consistent basis. Definitely a good find!
